Consumer Financial Protection
Areas
When money disappears from your account without authorization, when a bank or fintech platform fails to return stolen funds, when debt collectors drain your bank account illegally, or a fraudster wires money out of your account without your permission, these aren't just regulatory violations, they result in real financial and emotional harm. I bring deep expertise in the laws designed to protect you: EFTA and Regulation E and consumer protection statutes as they apply to electronic payments, including peer-to-peer transfers, wire transfers, ATM withdrawals, prepaid accounts, and international remittances.
The system that's supposed to protect your financial information and reputation is broken. Companies fail to secure data, then shift blame when it's stolen. Credit reporting agencies profit from selling inaccurate information about you. Background screening companies report outdated or wrong information to employers and landlords. When you try to fix these errors, you face bureaucratic mazes designed to wear you down.
I bring federal enforcement expertise to navigate these systems and force accountability. I handle data breach cases where inadequate security exposed your information, identity theft matters where institutions refuse to acknowledge fraud, credit reporting inaccuracies that impact your credit score, and employment and tenant screening violations that cost you job and housing opportunities. I also pursue expungements to clear records and help you rebuild your life.
Point-of-sale financing preys on people trying to do the right thing, like save on energy costs, fix their roof, or make much-needed home improvements. Door-to-door salespeople target elderly homeowners, limited-English households, and families who can't afford cash prices. They promise savings, push same-day signing, misrepresent tax credits, and hide massive dealer fees that inflate loan amounts well above the ordinary cash price. By the time families realize the system doesn't work, the savings were lies, or the contractor went bankrupt, they're locked into loans that can exceed $100,000.
I fight these predatory practices with deep knowledge of the solar lending fraud crisis and home improvement scams plaguing communities nationwide. I pursue lenders or middle-man companies that make misrepresentations about tax credits, savings, and system performance. I focus on cases where vulnerable populations, such as elderly consumers and limited-English families—were deliberately targeted with financing they couldn't afford for products that don't deliver what was promised.
Consulting
&
Strategic Services
Consumer financial protection cases often require specialized regulatory knowledge. Fintech platforms, payment processors, digital lenders operate in complex regulatory gray areas sometimes designed to evade traditional oversight. I work with plaintiffs' firms, state and local governments, and nonprofit organizations as co-counsel, as a contract attorney, or on a flat-fee basis, to bring regulatory expertise to your cases.
I can help identify EFTA/Regulation E violations in fintech markets, develop strategic legal theories for emerging payment issues, build evidentiary records that hold up under scrutiny, and navigate the regulatory frameworks governing nonbank financial services.
I also partner with attorneys, state and local governments, and nonprofits serving clients who need specialized expertise but face barriers to traditional representation. I accept referrals for vulnerable populations, such as justice-impacted individuals, elderly consumers, limited-English communities, providing low-cost or pro bono representation with the same investigative rigor and regulatory knowledge I brought to federal enforcement.
I partner with nonprofit financial institutions and government agencies to build proactive compliance into your operations. I help you design and launch products that meet consumer protections requirements and operational needs, while serving your goals, and protecting both consumers and your institution. Whether you're launching a new product or integrating consumer payment functionality into your systems, I bring my CFPB enforcement and supervision expertise to help you navigate complex regulatory frameworks, all while staying true to your public service mission and at rates nonprofit and government organizations can actually afford.
Compliance consulting services are distinct from legal representation and do not create an attorney-client relationship unless separately agreed in writing.
